Dr. Rumana Hossain is a Lecturer at UNSW Sydney and a researcher at the Centre for Sustainable Materials Research & Technology (SMaRT@UNSW). She completed her Ph.D. at UNSW in 2020 and has since become a key contributor in the field of sustainable materials and the circular economy.
Her research focuses on transforming complex waste streams—including waste plastics, packaging waste, e-waste, waste batteries, automotive waste, and rubber tyres—into valuable, high-performance materials and products. She specialises in synthesising new materials from waste and investigating their structure–property relationships using advanced analytical, mechanical, electrochemical, and high-temperature processing techniques.
With over 70 publications, 2 patents, and more numerous invited conference presentations, Dr. Rumana combines academic excellence with real-world impact. She leads industry-engaged projects and collaborates with global partners to drive innovation in circular materials and research commercialisation.
